Finding electrical hotspots with infrared inspections

The importance of identifying electrical hot spots during infrared inspections cannot be overstated. Thermal imaging has been used in electrical system inspections since this technology was unveiled more than forty years ago. The operating conditions of electrical systems can be determined by looking at the thermal photographs of the system’s components and checking the radiometric data.

Thermal imaging inspections are a great way to monitoring electrical systems because it begins to degrade as soon as any electrical or power system is installed. No matter how heavily a circuit is loaded, vibration, wear and tear, and heat can make electrical connections loose over time. Electrical connections have a natural tendency to degrade over time, and unfortunately  these deteriorating connections can cause further faults if they are not discovered and fixed.

Don’t ignore electrical hotspots

Once hotspots have been identified and the site team is made aware, this information should not be ignored.  In our experience ignoring hot spots in electrical systems can lead to several serious risks.

  1. Electrical Fires: Hot spots can cause insulation to degrade, leading to short circuits and potentially catastrophic fires putting lives and buildings at risk.
  2. Equipment Failure: Overheating can damage electrical components, leading to unexpected equipment failures and costly repairs to critical infrastructure.
  3. Electrocution: Faulty wiring or connections that cause hot spots can increase the risk of electric shocks leading to injuries and/or loss of life.
  4. Increased Energy Consumption: Overheating components often operate less efficiently, leading to higher ongoing energy usage and costs.
  5. Property Damage: Electrical fires and equipment failures can cause significant damage to property, resulting in expensive repairs and potential loss of valuable assets

Addressing hot spots promptly is crucial to maintaining safety and preventing these risks. If we detect a hot spot, it’s best to consult a qualified electrician to inspect and resolve the issue in a quick and safe manner.
