Which Building Reg’s cover Sound Insulation Testing?

So, which billings reg’s cover sound insulation testing in the UK? Approved Document E or Part E of the Building Regulations as its also known, focuses on the resistance to the passage of sound between dwellings.

Here are some key requirements of Part E when in comes to sound insulation performance between dwellings.

Key Requirements for airborne sound

Airborne Sound Insulation: This applies to walls and floors separating different dwellings. The minimum performance standards are:

New Build Developments:

  • Dividing Walls: A minimum of 45 dB DnT,w + Ctr (decibels normalized to a standard reverberation time).
  • Dividing Floors: A minimum of 45 dB DnT,w + Ctr.

Conversion Developments

  • Dividing Walls: A minimum of 43 dB DnT,w + Ctr (decibels normalized to a standard reverberation time).
  • Dividing Floors: A minimum of 43 dB DnT,w + Ctr.

Key Requirements for Impact sound

Airborne Sound Insulation: This applies to walls and floors separating different dwellings. The minimum performance standards are:

New Build Developments:

  • Impact Sound Insulation: This applies to floors separating different dwellings. The maximum performance standard is:
  • Floors: A maximum of 62 dB L’nT,w (impact sound pressure level normalized to a standard reverberation time).

Conversion Developments

Floors: A maximum of 64 dB L’nT,w (impact sound pressure level normalized to a standard reverberation time).

Sound Testing Process

Pre-Completion Testing (PCT): Sound insulation testing must be carried out before the building is completed to ensure compliance with Part E standards. The testing should be undertaken when the building is completed, but prior to the installation of carpets.

Qualified sound testers: Tests must be conducted by qualified professionals who are members of recognised bodies such as the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

Final documentation/sound test reports

Certification: Upon passing the sound testing, a valid sound test pass certificate is issued to confirm compliance with building regulations. This certificate is essential for obtaining building control approval.
