What will be the Cost of a Smoke Shaft Air Test?

Another common question we get asked is what will be the cost of a smoke shaft air test? The cost of smoke shaft air testing can vary based on several factors, including the size of the building location, the number and size of the smoke shafts and if the testing needs to be undertaken ‘out of hours.

Information required to accurately quote a smoke shaft air test

  1. PDF Drawings – Before issuing a formal quote, we need to assess the project based on PDF drawings. The drawings need to show the footprint of the shaft i.e. 2m x 1m and the height of the shaft.
  2. Working out the size of the smoke shafts – we usually require the smoke shaft data prior to the air test visit to add to our software prior to undertaking the test, this consists of the floor, roof, wall size, as well as the volume of the shaft. In may cases the client is unable to undertake the calculations for us and asks us to do it on their behalf. This can often take quite a lot of extra time due to the size and complexity of the smoke shaft.
  3. The size and complexity of the smoke shaft – if the smoke shaft is very large, say over 20 floors it may take longer to undertake the test and extra manpower may be required. on some air tests we may need to supply up to 3 operatives.
  4. Sizing of equipment – if a high-powered fan set is required, it may take a 2-man team to install it rather than a one operative.
  5. Test Location – if a test is in a large city with no parking, this often means we need to supply 2 operatives to undertake the test, even if it’s a small smoke shaft.
  6. Out of hours testing – if out of hours testing is required in the evening and/or on Saturdays and Sundays, this can be undertaken for a small uplift in cost.
  7. Last minute tests – we can supply a ‘last minute’ test service for a small uplift in cost.
  8. Testing smoke shafts that have failed – due to our comprehensive air leakage surveys, we often get asked to test smoke shafts that have been failed by other air test companies. The extra costs for the smoke and/or thermal imaging surveys will be added to the smoke shaft test, so you have a single cost with no hidden extras.
